Marble Palace, Kolkata
The Marble Palace is one of the city’s coolest hidden gems of Kolkata. It is a gorgeous mansion that happens to be a short drive, just 6.6 kms, from Samilton Hotel, it’s the kind of place that makes you stop and stare. It is grand, a little mysterious, and not to mention full of surprises.
A Little History
The Marble Palace was built in 1835 by Raja Rajendra Mullick. Raja was a wealthy Bengali zamindar and art collector. He loved European art and architecture, and it shows in the architectural choices. The entire mansion is made of gleaming white marble, with tall Corinthian pillars, chandeliers from Europe, and elegant statues that wouldn’t look out of place in an Italian museum. It is owned by the Mullick family till today.
Fun Things to Do
The house itself is the main attraction. You’ll see everything from original paintings by people such as Rubens and Reynolds to busts of Napoleon and Queen Victoria. There’s also a collection of clocks, mirrors, porcelain vases, and some very dramatic sculptures. One of the most unexpected parts? There is a private zoo on the grounds! It was made in 1854 the oldest zoo in India. It’s not massive but still an amazing feature of the palace.
You can’t take photos inside, but the rooms, the art, and the over-the-top decor are things you’ll remember long after. If you’re into old houses, weird collections, or just want to see something totally different from the usual tourist spots, this is the place for you.
WHEN TO GO
The best time to visit is October to March, when the weather’s cooler and walking around the estate is way more pleasant but note that each Thursday the palace is closed for vistors. Other times-April to September the palace is close on Monday and Thursday.
